25And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years.26She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.27When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,28because she thought, "If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed."29Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.
1. Why does it point out that she suffered under doctors? 2. She heard about Jesus, but why did she believe that Jesus' clothes would heal? (Pagan thought?)
30At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?" 31"You see the people crowding against you," his disciples answered, "and yet you can ask, 'Who touched me?' "
1.Was Jesus against women touching him? Should girls touch guys? 2.Did all the people in the crowd have all their diseases healed since they were also touching Jesus?
32But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it.33Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth.34He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering."
1.Why was the woman afraid of Jesus? 2.He calls her daughter. Is that significant?
Luke 18 1Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.2He said: "In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men.3And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, 'Grant me justice against my adversary.' 4"For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, 'Even though I don't fear God or care about men,5yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won't eventually wear me out with her coming!' "
1.The judge doesn't care? What does he care about? 2.Why did the widow keep going back to judge and not try something different?
6And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says.7And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off?8I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"
1.Wait, does God not care? Is he like the unjust judge? 2.Will God find faith in Harvest San Diego?
Lottie Moon(December 12, 1840 – December 24 , 1912) "Our hearts were made glad last Sabbath by the baptism of an individual who has interested us by his firm stand under the persecutions of his ... family. They fastened him in a room without food or water, and endeavored to starve him into submission. Providentially, they did not take away his Christian books. He studied these more closely than ever. The pangs of hunger he satisfied by eating some raw beans he found in the room, and when he wanted water he commenced to dig a well in the room in which he was confined. Chinese houses are built on the ground and do not have plank floors as with us. When the family discovered the well-digging they yielded. They had no wish to ruin their dwelling. The man has shown that he is made of stern stuff, and we hope he will be very useful as a Christian."- Lottie MoonTungchow, China .July 1874 Foreign Mission Journal
"How many there are... who imagine that because Jesus paid it all, they need pay nothing"- Lottie Moon
There are 400 Baptist pastors in Virginia alone. But why is it that when we asked for a pastor to come help the young Chinese church, we were forced to appoint a Presbyterian?
4 Tips for Talking to Parents about Missions You aren’t going to be able to just slip away for 5+ weeks this summer without your parents noticing, so you need to talk with them.
If you're like 75% of our short-term project applicants, you want to go on a summer project, but worry about what your parents will say. Don't despair! Here are some tips that will help you dialogue with them and build stronger communication for the future:
Do your homework. You need to understand the program and it’s goals BEFORE you talk with them. Why do you want to go on this program? What will you do? What do you expect to learn?
Choose your words wisely.Speak in terms that make sense to them and in ways that will help them to feel comfortable. Put yourself in their shoes and address their concerns. Your parents are going to need pictures, facts, and good reasoning (see above). Possible talking points are below.
Include them in the process.Don't just make a proclamation: “I’m going to ____ this summer!” but instead invite them into this decision. This is a practical way to honor them.
Let the conversation continue. This isn’t a one-time talk. Allow your parents time to warm up to the idea. Remember, you had to warm up to the idea too!
What are you going to say? Here are some suggestions: 1.You are going tolearn about life in another part of the world.A cultural exchange like GoLiveServe’s summer projects not only builds bridges between countries, but gives us opportunities to mature as people.Chinaand theMuslim worldare key players in world events in the years ahead.
2.It serves your long-term goals as well.Although your primary motivation should be to use this summer to serve and to share God’s love with others, it is true that thecross-cultural communication skillsand international experience can be beneficial to your resume. Our projects seek to develop leaders who will live out their values in any situation they find themselves.
When I first came to UCSD I thought Harvest was a FOB fellowship cuz the banner was like a Chinese red haha. Then Erik Fang brought me and I realized it was the extension of Harvest LA which was where I was from. Surprisingly, Harvest back then was kinda charismatic and that's why I really liked it. I remember the worship was really good and it kept me coming back.
Then Pastor Jeff came and I discovered Reformed Theology. What actually really changed my life was being introduced to John Piper and that helped me to understand theology in a much deeper and helpful way. I think Reformed Theology also burdened me for missions because it helped me to see where the need really was and what we really should be living for.
As China Team is now being lead by Virginia and Phil and I'm taking a team to Kyrgyzstan, I realize how faithful God has been. I only realized how much I suck at leading missions after I started with OMF and realized how they do things. Thanks for putting up with me!
BTW, I think I have the record for most crazy ideas approved. Hopefully future aspiring leaders will have an easier time.
This is back in Freshman year when I was too cool for life
As I'm finishing up my support raising for my job with OMF I realize how God has timed this job opportunity. I kinda wonder why I never looked into this job earlier and saved myself a lot of headache figuring out God's will for my life. It wasn't until I looked at my support numbers and realized that over half my donors are from CEC that I started to see how God timed everything. I've only been hanging out with the young adults from CEC for a few months and just began to start sharing with them some of the things I've been doing in China but I feel that God has really been moving their hearts. So much so, that some of them are even starting to go on our missions trips. But as someone pointed out, I also wouldn't have been able to finish my support raising without their help. So thank you CEC. You guys came into my life just when I needed you the most. You have no idea how much of a blessing you guys have been to me.
BTW, I'm still $5,000 dollars away from finishing so if you know anyone who wants to get involved in missions let me know =op
36 In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which, when translated, is Dorcas[b]), who was always doing good and helping the poor.37About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room.38Lydda was near Joppa; so when the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, "Please come at once!" 39 Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them. 40 Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, "Tabitha, get up." She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up. 41He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called the believers and the widows and presented her to them alive. 42This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord. 43Peter stayed in Joppa for some time with a tanner named Simon.
1. Is it important to mention all the good works that Dorcas did? Why did the author mention her deeds? 2. Why did Peter raise her from the dead?
2 Timothy 4:9-11
9 Do your best to come to me quickly,10for Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia.11Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry.
1. Who is Demas and why is he important? (Philemon 1:24) 2. Jesus loved the world too (John 3:16), so what's wrong with Demas?
Saint Paula • heralded from a family that clained Julius Ceasar as their own- pagans and Roman • when her husband died she went into depression and awoke as a recommitted Christian • she felt defrauded when the poor received charity oth than hers • when asked what her children's inheritance would be, she said, "The mercy of God!"
Viva Perpetua • one of the earliest surviving writings from a female- circa 200ad • weaned her baby while in jail with her dad pleading her to renounce Christ • died a bloody death in the coliseum
1. Women have been famous for often being the most generous givers to the church 2. Don't get bitter at the church and don't be afraid. God will use his church. Trust that he will make the change. 3. When you look at advertising for women today, what does the culture say women should be? What is God's intention for women?
